a brief
history
Angelo and
Wendy Diletti first started plantings in 1983, releasing the first
vintage Riesling in 1986. This Riesling won an 18 point silver award at
the Mount Barker Wine Show that year. Since then the Rieslings have
consistently won silver awards or better in regional or capital city
shows. Robin Bradley in his "Little Gold Book", Australian and New
Zealand Vintages, awards Castle Rock Rieslings five stars.
The 2000
vintage was Castle Rocks' 15th year of wine production. Previously the
wines were made by Winemaker Michael Staniford at Alkoomi Wines,
Frankland. Now Wendy and Angelo's son, Robert Diletti, has taken on the task of
making Castle Rock Wines after spending two years as the Winemakers
Assistant at Alkoomi.
Furthermore
the construction of a winery at Castle Rock Estate run by Rob and Angelo
Diletti means that personalised attention to wine production which
commenced with the 2001 vintage. Since first planting the Rieslings in
1983, the Diletti family has expanded the varieties grown at Castle
Rock.
These now
include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and
Merlot. Additionally a Liqueur Muscat and a Sparkling White are
available. There is also a Late Harvest Riesling. Pinot Noir is the most
popular of the reds, usually selling out within 3 or 4 months of their
release.
